Prints I Would Love To See

The world of Lolita is filled with so many different symbols, designs, and motifs. But despite the vast array of loli-appropriate symbols to choose from, so many brands tend to stick with the basics like cute animals, desserts, and toys. This gets really old, really fast though, especially if you don't particularly care for that side of Lolita. Of course, there are a few brands always coming out with something a little bit different, which is always refreshing, but not nearly often enough. So, what kind of prints would Caro-chan like to see more of? Well! Let's find out :D

Cherubs
I would love a Lolita print with chubby little cherubs on it. The fatter the better, I love the little things, they are just too cute! And I don't mean a small 1 color print job reminiscent of Christmas fabrics, I want big Renaissance styled cherubs with pink cheeks and curly golden hair carrying garlands of bold colored roses floating around in a blue sky with big fluffy white clouds. A little over the top and tacky? Eh, not any more than teddy bears having a parade around the hem of my skirt.

Books
So this one has been done before, recently by Innocent World and a short while ago by Baby, but, still, I would love to see more prints with elegant antique books. Maybe a dark brown print to give it a quite, old, library feel with books lined up on a bottom hem. Not a neat perfect line of books though, but a bookshelf of someone who obviously reads a lot and loves to read. Some books laying on their sides, books leaning, books stacked on top of other books, as well as interesting items like old dolls, tiny globes, and pretty containers hidden among the books.

IW's take on books

Tarot Cards
I'm a sucker for tarot cards, I love the symbols and the art of tarot cards, and I would really love to see them featured on a Lolita print. Alice and the Pirates actually has an upcoming print featuring them, but since the remodeling of their website I have no idea where such things go, but the last I saw it was an all over print with tarot inspired designs all over it, which sounds good enough for me! I can't wait to see what it looks like.

Stained Glass Lamps
A lamp print dress might seem weird, but, hey, Innocent World put out a furniture print earlier this year, so lamps aren't too strange! I can imagine a bunch of different stained glass lamps lined up along the hem of a dress with a vertical striped flowery wallpaper pattern in the background.

Jewelry
I'm sort of surprised this hasn't been done before (or has it and I just can't recall? I bet if anyone did it was Meta!) but I would love a print featuring elegant Victorian styled jewelry. I would love this on a deep jewel toned dress, like burgundy or a vivid deep blue, with vertical lines of pearls and gems going down the dress ending in elegant scallops, sort of as if very long necklaces were draped over the dress. Actual rhinestones scattered throughout the print as well as a metallic gold ink would make a print like this fantastic and over the top in the very best way possible.

Tea Cups
Another print that has been done a few times, but not nearly as much as it should be done. I would love to see a muted pastel print with a decadent floral pattern in subtle colors with an assortment of tea cups at the bottom, some stacked up, some full, some tipped over even!

AP, doing the tea cup thing.

Medical Illustrations
A bit morbid and guro, but I love it non the less. I would kill to see some more grotesque in Lolita. Maybe a circularly system that connects to scattered anatomical hearts. I imagine this done in a faded red on an ivory background with the print done in a simple 1 color engraving style, just like old medical illustrations.

Octopi
Who doesn't want to see an octopus print Lolita piece? It seems like every time the subject of dream prints pops up nearly everyone wants to see an octopus print piece. What's so Lolita about octopi? Absolutely nothing, but they are such awesome animals. I would love to see a piece similar to Angelic Pretty's old Twinkle Mermaid print, a solid pastel sea green dress with simple octopi screen printed around the hem of the skirt.

Unicorns
Sure, we recently got Metamorphoses Twinkle Journey print featuring unicorns, but they were much too cute for my liking. I love the medieval styled unicorn, especially the one featured in a series of tapestries called The Hunt of the Unicorn. I imagine a print like this on a deep green background, with scattered greenery in the style of typical medieval paintings with an elegant forest along the bottom with unicorns grazing, resting, and generally being elegant and made of magic along the bottom. Metallic gold printing along the edges of horns, hooves, and manes, would make something like this look incredible.

Unicorns are so bad ass!

I'm not normally not too big on prints, I tend to prefer solids and generic prints like flowers, but if brands released a few of these, I definitely wouldn't be able to resist! If you're interested in learning a bit about the mythology behind often-used Lolita prints, Lolita Charm has begun a new series about just that, called Lady's Lessons, so keep your eyes open for more about that!

What kind of prints are you just dying to see? Do you happen to collect any and everything you can find on one particular theme? Are there any kind of prints you're just sick of seeing? Personally, I'm sick to death of toy themed prints, or really any print that would make me feel like I turned a nursery's curtains into a dress. As far as themes that instantly make a piece go to the top of my want list, definitely religious themed prints. While I am by no means religious, I really enjoy religious art, and it's always a treat to see it in Lolita, despite how controversial it sometimes is.

  1. Is there seriously a tarot card printed dress coming out? Ohmygod, I'm SO excited to see it! If it's from Alice and the Pirates I'm sure it'll be beautiful!

And I agree on the octopus thing. xD I'd love to own a dress with that kind of print on it because I have an octopus necklace and bracelet that are dying for something to be worn with!

One theme I would LOVE to see is a Totoro or Soot Sprite print. xD I can not express my love enough for Totoro, so I'd probably buy every article of clothing if such a print ever came out.

  2. OMG :D
I think that we have the same taste on print ^^
I'm sick of "Lovely psycho bunny" or "Holly cross 666 dark gothic" print xDD
    Thanks for your amazing blog!

  3. I so agree with books, tarot, medical illustrations and octopi!! That would make some terribly awesome prints!
Other then that I'm a sucker for everything called clocks and clockworks (hell, my curtains even are covered in such prints). I would also love to see some macabre circus prints. Instead of this jolly golly prints with happy clowns and elephants paraing, it would be awesome with some darker and more macabre circus prints... Macabre prints at all!!

  4. Sorry if this has already been mentioned but Baby have just released a print with tarot cards on it. You can see it on their reserves page. It looks really cool!

  5. I think a seamstress themed print would be nice, with big old style fabric scissors, reels of thread, thimbles, etc :)

And I absolutely love the idea of medical illustrations, I love the details on those images

  6. I'm not so into prints either, but I really would love a more classic take on teacups.
I would really like to see a transportation type print with airplanes, trains, cars, and bikes though.

  7. I love the idea of Tarot Cards. I was actually hoping to spot some tarot card fabric myself and make something....which would probably be cheaper than anything a brand would put out.

  8. I would absolutely adore a white skirt with bare winter trees in silhouette growing up from the hem. As a matter of fact, I intend to make just such a skirt once I get my sewing machine out of storage! :3 Another thing I'm thinking of making is a dress based around a punctuation motif - it'd be a lot of work, but so fun to wear.

  9. I love your picks, so cute! I don't currently dress Lolita, but I love it - and if I saw a dress with a tarot card print, I'm not sure I'd be able to resist...

  10. Alice and the Pirates also have a print of Tarot cards in various colored JSK's. :)

  11. Ah, I totally love the unicorns, tea cups and jewelry (Jewelry Jelly? XD), I really love the ideas!

I'm not sure if there's a print I'd buy instantly if it ever came out... I'm inspirationless I guess... I do adore fairies though, I'm not sure if there are any fairy prints. I'd love it though. ^^

  12. I never thought I would get tired of candy prints but now they make me sick :P I would love a book print as well! I think I would love a sky theme, midnight blue with stars and such :)

  13. I would love a hedgehog print. Also, some lesser done fairy tales (like the Princess and the Pea), and some Shakespeare inspired prints would be awesome. My dream print would be a MMM Iron Gate style print, but using Hogwarts.

  14. My favorite is the book idea! And...you know how I feel about octopi XD
The medical illustrations would be really cool, but unfortunately probably unlikely...maybe someday we could get some custom fabric and...

And wow, I didn't know the unicorn's horns were so big in medieval art. Reminds me of the Narwhal!Lolita skirt on poupeegirl:

  15. The books are my loved things too, they could look soo good on a brown or a cream JSK *-* And the Tarot Cards are a really good idea :3

And, you will laugh, I think, but a print with the Hungarian State Building, the Parlament.Type in the google "Parlament". I think this is one from the most beautiful buildings around the world :D

    Or a print, with bridges :D I like building *-* <3

  16. I love tea cups and unicorns!! I think the lolita needs that type of prints :)

  17. Agreeing so hard with the medical illustrations & octopi. I'm slightly obsessed with octopi and other tentacley creatures... I'd die for a Lovecraft print!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh wow! I'm so with you on the anatomy prints! I could just see them in gold or silver prints on classic colors, like white/off white, black, wine red and dark green. Both on light fabrics and heavy velvets!
The Octopi print is also something I'd bury my claws in! I luurve octopi (in fact I have an octopus tattooed on my hip XD ) Weirdly enough, with my insane lurve of sweet lolita, I'm now slowly leaning towards more classical/dark styles, so your ideas would be perfect!

You could also make the most glorious bonnet with a beautiful octopus crawling up one side, or with withered and dusty flowers with a gold or silver rib cage or even skull hidden among the petals.
Sorry, I'm getting all sorts of ideas from this post <3

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh my goodness, everything you described are like dream prints for me! I mean, every single one. *_*

I would adore a gaudy cherub print, like if the entire bottom of a JSK or skirt was like the sistine chapel with cherubs or something along those lines, any of that gaudy religious art in general, I'd eat it up. I wish they just sold fabric like that, I've searched but didn't come up with much, or anything really.

And I'm totally digging the idea of a medieval unicorn print, that's really amazing! I hope someday all these ideas are made real for prints!

  20. Innocent World had Angel Land, no? In classical style but still...
I want a print with Landscapes. An epic print with a view. That would be awesome but difficult I suppose...Or forests! I need more green in my wardrobe. Green prints that is.
I also want a print with dragins or other mythical creatures.
I dig the idea of a Hogwards or magical school print too. We can stick magical books and Tarot on it too ;).

  21. Alice and the Pirates has a print out right now called St. Mephisto Cathedral. It has a cathedral and a bible, I believe.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I really love some of these print ideas, especially the books and the stained glass lamps. Personally my dream print would be something with dragons on it but I highly doubt anyone would ever make one seeing as they're not what most people would see as typically lolita.

  23. Haha, I have designed dresses/collections with cherubs, octopi, guro/medical stuff and unicorns! Not all in one piece though, lol :)

  24. I'm really loving the Medical Instructions print idea! I really do enjoy all the colorful, and childish prints that have been released, but I also would not mind owning a dress with a scattered print of parts of the human anatomy. :D I've always admired this type of sketchy artwork used in medical instructions ... If only in the future maybe an actual Guro/edgy kind of brand will pop up and make this idea a reality. *_*

  29. I'd love to see a bicycle-print.
Maybe a historical "Hochrad" (this is the German term.. ^^**) with a dandy raising his hat on it. I'd love to include "I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride it where I like" from Queen's song, too. ^3^

    ReplyDelete
  30. XD Chicken prints would be so cute! Are you talking about that rooster coat they released? Or did they have another rooster print? That was an awesome design, it was just such a strange coat for Lolita style.

    ReplyDelete
  31. That would be awesome! I loooove those kind of bicycles with the big weels and that would be so perfect along the hem of a skirt, especially if it had those lyrics on it.

  32. You can search around for a few places that do custom order prints, or you can learn to screen print. The problem with either of these is that they are both a bit expensive and you need to have a lot of artistic skills (or know someone who does!) to be able to pull them off!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love those prints as well, I have a great big Grey's Anatomy book that I love to browse through, as morbid as that sounds. Too bad we don't have a brand with a guro twist, we have AatP with a pirate twist, someone needs to have a guro side-project!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Have you! That's awesome, I have been thinking of doing some sketches as well, just so I can dream about these kinds of pieces at least. Haha, all in one print would be a bit too much, but kind of awesome in it's own way.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That would be incredible! And I bet if it was done right it could look very elegant and pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  36. XD Are they?! Haha, great minds think alike I guess! Oh my gosh a Sistine Chapel and cherub print would be devine. If I had the patience, and a bit more artistic skill, I would be willing to design my own fabric and try something like this, but I think it's a bit much for me. I've always been on the hunt for religious themed fabric and it's strangely hard to find. There is this one, sky blue fabric with rosaries scattered all over it that I love and is long out of print but some times pops up for sale, sadly the last time I saw it it was going for nearly $40 a yard. Ouch.

    ReplyDelete
  37. My favorite tentacled creatures are nautilus! But I think octopi would make a much prettier border print because they have big and pretty tentacles. Oh gosh! Something down right Lovecraftian would be amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Too true! I'm surprised that there aren't more tea cup themed prints at least. Everyone knows that Lolita's only drink tea XD

    ReplyDelete
  39. I googled that building and it is fantastic! I think something like that would look beautiful along a skirt hem, or bridges. I think that architecture is a very over looked source of beauty sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oooh that would be so awesome to have something like that on velvet! I love the octopus tattoo btw XD That's such a great thing to get a tattoo of!

XD Don't give me bonnet ideas, because now I REALLY wish I could get ahold of some kind of fabric like this. A hidden skull sounds fantastic!

No need to apologize about your ideas, they are fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh I've been considering custom fabric! XD I just need to get a little better and a looooot more patient (okay, and a bit more cash) before I ever attempt any of these though.

I loved the narwal poupee skirt because they looked like medieval unicorns, I sort of wish that was a real skirt instead of the 80's fantastic unicorns that Meta used.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Too much candy is never good for you, even if it's on a skirt XD A sky theme would be great! I think some girl made a custom printed night sky themed Lolita dress a while ago. I would love a big bright sunset styled dress, haha whenever I'm out around sunset, and it is particularly pretty, I always think "Wow! Those colors would look great as a Lolita dress!"

  43. Did Jewelry Jelly actually have jewelry on it? I thought it just had jello! A fairy print would be too cute, I really love Victorian illustrations of fairies and I think they could be perfect for a dress print.

  47. How about a sushi themed print? I don't know if that idea might seem weird; most Lolita food prints are typically either fruit or very sugary sweets. However, sushi is still a food that is often so artfully arranged I think I could see it working anyway. It's everyone's favorite Japanese food that eventually spread all over the world just because it's so darn epic and good...kinda like Lolita, don't you think? Just seems like the perfect subtle nod to Lolita's country of origin.

  58. Lolita prints could encapsulate a myriad of themes and aesthetics, from whimsical pastels to bold, provocative designs. Imagine delicate cherry blossoms dancing on a soft, chiffon fabric, evoking a sense of innocence and beauty. Alternatively, bold polka dots in contrasting colors could exude a playful yet chic vibe. For those who embrace vintage charm, retro motifs like cat-eye glasses, vinyl records, or classic cars could adorn the fabric, transporting wearers to a bygone era.
